The Statue of Freedom

I love the Statue of Freedom that sits atop the U.S. Capitol dome. I seriously cannot get over how much I love her. Every time I’m running past the Capitol I gaze up at her and say hello. There’s something so badass about the way she stands. It’s like she leans on one leg, with swagger, carries a sword and shield in order to defend freedom… and of course laurel wreath 💁‍♀️. While her body faces south, her head is cocked to the side, toward the east.

Most people won’t actually see her face since they’re looking up from the front of the building, and she doesn’t even care— she’s even looking at them. She’s not concerned with where people are. She’s doesn’t even look back at Lincoln (Memorial), Washington (Monument), Jefferson (Memorial), or any newbie in the White House. She has her own direction.

I really resonate with that because I fight to be free. I’ve kind of just been myself this whole lifetime. As an only child I grew up playing by myself, coming up with all these ideas, wanting to be everything and achieve anything. I live such a truly unique and great life that I love, so I seldom wonder if I’d ever get married or have children because I value freedom so much. Expressing sovereignty through my country, my state, my work, and my self.

But there’s another thing about her posture I love. Her head’s not just turned to the side. She’s looking up. There’s something hopeful about it, almost as though she sees a vision, something that isn’t here yet, but could be. What a profound posture in the physical, and posture on this life.
